On this historical occasion, the delegates of Nelson Mandela University, a south African comprehensive public University discussed with Salale University representatives to firm up bilateral relations to promote cooperation in academics, Research,Supervision of joint Doctoral degrees,
launch joint graduate programs, Organization of conferences, seminars, and symposiums, student and staff exchange, joint research, and engagements, etc. in all fields of study on June 26/2022 at Radisson Blue Hotel. The discussion was led by the President of Salale University Dr. Genanew Gofe and the Vice-Chancellor of Nelson Mandela University Professor Sibongile Muthwa.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sibongile Muthwa, disclosed that NMU strives to be a dynamic African university, recognized for its leadership in generating knowledge for a sustainable future by contributing to sustainable development through excellent academic programs, research, and service delivery offering a diverse range of quality educational opportunities that will make a critical and constructive contribution to regional, national and global sustainability. Since the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) sought a mandate to name itself in honor of Mandela and reorient its character and praxis in line with the values of principles of this global icon. Therefore, having this kind of relationship has great value to be prototypical for African universities to create a resilient link among themselves.
Dr. Genanew Gofe, the president of SlU also mentioned that Salale University named its main campus to commemorate General Tadesse Biru – known for his struggle of equal opportunity of education for every nation; a good friend and military trainer of Nelson Mandela. Thus, this partnership ratifies the historical relationship between the two friends, their country, and the two universities – Salale and Nelson Mandela University. These universities are expected to be the primary custodian of the two friends Nelson Mandela and Tadesse Biru, who collectively embarked on establishing this relationship. The president added more on that the relationship should not merely be symbolic; it has to be a working relationship since we are committed to a vigorous intellectual collaboration that supports quality research and education in our continent.
Finally, the discussion was recapped on the 27th of July by signing the MoU at the Embassy of the Republic of South Africa.
