Profile of Department of Economics
The department of Economics is one of the core departments of the College of Business and Economics and is located on the second floor on Block-7 at General Tadesse Biru campus (main Campus). The Department was opened in 2016 and is committed to excellence in the core activities of teaching and research in the field of economics.
At present, the Department teaches B.A. in Economics (Regular and Extension) and MSc. in development economics (Regular and Weekend) programs. Currently, it has 240 students enrolled in both regular and extension programs pursuing their studies. There are 19 academic staffs of whom 2 are on study leave and one supportive staff working at the department. The aim of the department is to produce competent professionals in Economics who will contribute to the country’s effort to realize sustainable economic development and provide problem solving research and community services. It provides students with a comprehensive basis for professional development and further education in economics through courses and research work. The BA. degree program in economics requires four years of study for full time regular students and five years for extension students. The MSc degree program in economics under its different specializations requires two years for both full time regular students and extension students.
The mission of the department is provision of quality education in economics subject areas, conducting research and community services to enhance the intellectual and economic validity of our country. Specifically,
- Produce knowledgeable, skilful and internationally competent, and local fit graduates
- Conduct research focusing on knowledge generation and technology transfer and disseminate results.
- Provide community and consultancy services in accordance with the needs of the community.
Vision of the department is to be one of the best departments in comprehensive universities by 2025.
General Objective of the Department
The main objective of the department is to train and produce competent professionals (Economists) who are well equipped with sufficient knowledge and professional skill for analyzing economic problems and proposing appropriate solutions.
Specific Objectives:
- To produce Economists (Economic thinkers) with basic skills that would help to teach and do research in areas of economics.
- To better acquaint the students with solid understanding of microeconomic theories, macroeconomic theories, and other economic issues for intelligent applications of economics in a way that improve the quality, relevance and output of graduates in economics in Ethiopia.
- To equip the students with the necessary methodologies in economics that enable them explain the economic phenomenon, undertake economic analysis and design economic policy.
- To produce graduates with a skill of planning, Project preparation, monitoring and evaluation.
- To enable the students undertake theoretical and applied researches relevant to the overall development strategy and vision of the country and address national problems of socio-economic roots; and disseminate research findings through outreach program.
- To promote interdisciplinary collaboration among the various programs in training, research and extension.
- To offer short term training courses and provides consultancy service for different organizations and community.
- To show students how economic science evolved, it’s present and future vision of the field and make them up-to-date with the dynamism of the field.
Currently, the department has a total of 18 staffs. Out of these 1 is professor, 12 are lecturers, 2 are Assistant Professors while the other 2 are on study leave and the other 1 is Graduate Assistant one.
