INTRODUCTION

In order to satisfy the existing current needs and the future demand of trained manpower in the language, for instance, to serve the community in public relation services in various government and non- governmental offices, to teach in high schools and teachers' training institutes and colleges, and to serve in media and communication centers, it has become very significant. Accordingly, the following was the major justifications for reviewing the existing Afan Oromo, Literature and Communication in BA and MA degree program more applied:

  • The use of Afan Oromo has become extremely important not only at regional level but also at national level in the new socio-political and cultural priority of Ethiopian government in order to emphasize the role of Afan Oromo for development, trade, trans-ethnic communication and overall national development.
  • The demands for Afan Oromo bachelor Art graduates at regional level, different institutions, governmental offices, judiciary bodies, etc…are highly increased. Thus, it is vital to employ Afan Oromo, Literature and Communication graduates in diversified fields like public services, institutions, and governmental and non-governmental organizations.

Current educational policy of our country is more concentrated on generic for skills’ life skills like cooperation, communication, problem solving and the community to whom the policy is designed for is generally in need of professionals with qualified specializations. Education is being directed to have direct relation with the world of work. To this end, educational program need to be split up in self-contained smaller units i.e. modules and these modules have independent status in content and (ideally) in time so that able to make students possessors of the competence.

OBJECTIVES OF AFAN OROMO, LITERATURE AND LITERATURE PROGRAM

The main objective of the establishment of Afaan Oromoo, Literature and Communication department is to train high-level qualified personnel capable of working in different settings: mass media workers, secondary school teachers, and public relation officers for governmental and non-governmental organizations. It also helps learners promote research skills in and/or on Afan Oromo and develop their concepts and knowledge of linguistics, literature, socio-cultural aspects of Oromo language.

Establishment

The Department of Afaan Oromoo, Literature and Communication is one of the departments introduced under the college of Social Sciences and Humanities at Salale University in 2011 E.C. During its establishment, the department began with 40 students in regular. In the same academic year, 130 Weekend students and 128 teachers in service during the summer program were admitted to the department. In 2012 number of students in regular 23, BA in weekend number of students 62, 2013 number of students BA in regular 40, number of students BA in Weekend 52, MA in weekend 24 and 2014 MA in Weekend 18 in general, the total number of first and second degree candidates enrolled in to the department of Afaan Oromoo, Literature and Communication in 2014 E.C. academic year 517 students.

Vision

In line with the vision of Salale University, department of Afaan Oromoo, Literature and Communication aspires to promote excellence in the production, growth and dissemination of advanced scientific knowledge through teaching, research and Community service that primarily focuses on technology transfer. Accordingly, the department devoted to produce well-trained, competent, and knowledgeable professionals in Afaan Oromoo, Literature and Communication who are accountable to the development of the nation.  

Mission

The mission of the  Program in Teaching Afaan Oromoo, Literature and Comminication seeks to educate and train students on Oromo linguistic aspects, literatures, cultures and research in the Language. It also prepares scholars/professionals who are capable of study Afaan Oromoo and its linguistic features, socio-cultural aspects and folklore-literature and on other social aspects of the society in order to disseminate the knowledge to researchers and others who want to know and study Oromo cultures, language and literature in relation to education.

  1. Conference on Oromo Folklore, Literature and Philosophy

Little is known about the gradual change witnessed in areas of Salale Oromo folklore and philosophical forms and expressions. Thus, awareness creation among the societies of this Zone is needed to sustain Oromo folklore and philosophy, and thus organizing academic forum significant contribution. So the Department of Afan Oromo, Literature Communication  organized a Conference on  sessions.

  1. Training On Revitalization Of The Gadaa System In North Showa Zone(Salale)

 The training is equipped, the identified Gadaa leaders and elders, and other stakeholders in the realm of Gadaa system, with the best possible practical knowledge, experience and skills in the topics identified.

  1. Training On Creating Awarness On Gadaa System and Research Methodology In Oromia Region North Showa Zone (Salale)

The training manual is meant to bring the authentic the principles of Gadaa rules and structures to the Gadaa leaders in the North Showa zone and build their capacity to make them teach others and/or dispense justice according to the Gadaa system.
