Overview of the Social Anthropology Department
Anthropology is the youngest social science discipline which was emerged as academic/scientific discipline in the late mid-19th century. Anthropology is the scientific study of what it means to be human. Anthropology is amid of social sciences, biological sciences and humanities. The anthropological scientific method relies on constant evaluation of, and critical thinking about, data collected in the field. By being exposed to the cultures and lifestyles of unfamiliar societies, learners can adopt a more critical and analytical stance toward conditions in their own society. These critical thinking skills enhance the reasoning abilities of learners wherever life takes them. Anthropological knowledge, thoughts and skills help to bringing together many different facets of a people’s way of life- social, religion, economic, political, and linguistic and so forth- in order to provide a nuanced context for understanding why they do what they do.
In line with the aforementioned realities about the concern and the subject matter of anthropology in general and social anthropology in particular, Salale University is one of the newly established public universities that has been giving social anthropology program in Bachelor Degree of Arts (BA) and Masters Degree of Arts (MA) since 2011 and 2013 E.C respectively.
