Introduction

The roles and functions of higher education in producing competent human resources with the necessary knowledge, attitudes, and skills are immense. Human resource development through higher education is of great importance for a successful social and economic development. There is a need to produce professionals with practical educational and psychological skills that would work with the grassroots. Education and Behavioral Studies Unit aims at producing well-equipped and competent graduates that would serve the society in different domains and at various levels of governmental and non-governmental organizations. The unit will participate on many key areas to the success of the university such as develop new programs in order to attract new students and markets, create and exploit new opportunities for knowledge transfer activity, ensure the highest levels of quality, integrity and ethics in community service and research areas.

Background/Establishment

The unit of education and behavioral studies in Salale University has evolved from sociology department, which was founded December 17, 2021.  Education and Behavioral Studies Unit has instructors from different areas of study namely from Psychology, Special need and inclusive education and, Curriculum and Instruction areas.  The aim of establishing the unit is to produce well-trained manpower in the area of education and behavioral sciences that will contribute towards the development of the country and, shoulder community responsibility to bring about the development effort of the nation through the provision of quality education, societal problem solving, research activities and community based services.

The presence of various social problems, & concerns such as spread of HIV/AIDS, its psychosocial consequences, high number of street children, orphanage, increasing rate of divorce, sexual abuse, its psychosocial effects & many other social challenges all indicate increasing demand of professionals in the field of education and behavioral studies. Additionally, people with disabilities are the large stand most disadvantaged minority in the community. An exclusion practice of persons with disabilities is an indicator of violating fundamental human rights that undermines their potential to contribute to poverty reduction and economic growth within their household, their community and the country. One way to combat such problems is creating inclusive culture by producing special need and inclusive education professionals.

Education and Behavioral Studies Unit provides professional assistance to individuals with personal, social, family, and educational problems, offer guidance and counseling services to students and other special groups such as street children, people living with HIV/AIDS, displaced individuals and orphans, give various psychological trainings in academic and non-academic settings. Additionally, the unit delivers professional assistance on educational issues to school teachers, administrators, identify, assess and develop early intervention programs for persons with special needs and, help individuals with disabilities to gain optimum vocational adjustment to rehabilitate them to fullest mental, social, vocational, and economic usefulness. Moreover, the unit will produce educational leaders and researchers who can address educational demands and challenges.

Therefore, Education and Behavioral Studies Unit strives to produce problem solving graduates that contribute to the education and socio-political development of the country through enhancing excellence in teaching, research, and community services.

General objective

The general objective of the education and behavioral studies unit is to produce well equipped and qualified graduates who can apply their theory and research based knowledge to meet the demands of organizations; to carry out quality research on various psychological, educational and social problems of the community and; to provide community services to individuals, institutions, and groups.

Specific Objectives

The specific objectives of Education and Behavioral Studies unit are to:

  • Produce qualified professionals who work in various governmental, nongovernmental, and private agencies
  • Carry out research on various psychological, educational and, social issues
  • Initiate, organize, and evaluate various educational and social development programs
  • Advocate for the right of persons with disabilities and vulnerabilities
  • Create and maintain successful inclusive environment for persons with disabilities and vulnerabilities
  • Promote the process of building inclusive society
  • Render rehabilitation services
  • Provide psychological services in governmental, nongovernmental, and private institutions
  • Offer community services to individuals, institutions, and groups regarding problems and issues relating to education and behavioral studies areas.

Mission

The Mission of Education and Behavioral Studies Unit is to produce highly qualified professionals in Education and Behavioral Studies areas through quality teaching, offering professional and community services and, conducting research to solve societal problems.

Vision

The vision of Education and Behavioral Studies unit is establishing a new college in Salale University by 2022/2023 and to be one of the top three and competent college among colleges found in Salale University through the provision of quality education, research and community service in education and behavioral studies areas by 2026.

Currently, the unit is undertaking necessary activities to open different B.A. degree and M.A. degree programs in Psychology, Special need and inclusive education, Educational Planning and Management and, Adult Education and Community Development.
